Architectural Features Can Turn A Simple Deck Into A Showpiece

You've decided to add a deck onto your home, but you don't want an ordinary one. However, your space and size requirements are such that the deck needs to be pretty small. Making it serve its purpose and look like a showpiece, too, might seem like a difficult undertaking, but it doesn't have to be.

With a few simple architectural features, gingerbread perhaps, a simple rectangular or even square deck can still stand out and even turn a boring backyard elevation into an extraordinary one. No matter the size, a few tricks of the trade can really come into play and perk up the appearance for a deck that not only serves functional purposes, but also makes a home look great.

Start out by choosing a design that matches your basic needs. If simple is the only way to go due to size constraints, perhaps considering an elevated deck will help begin to add to the eye appeal. Maybe a set of stairs leading from the deck to a backyard garden? Or a well laid out cobblestone path?

With a basic design idea in place, consider the size requirements and constraints. Now, make sure you have room to handle what you need your deck for – parties, barbecuing, backyard sun bathing.

After that, here are some different design tricks you can employ to transform a boring deck into a great one:

* Try adding railings. Whether they're simple or elaborate in shape, these can really help add appeal and functionality to a deck.

* Create a deck "wall" by enclosing railing supports in screen, wood panels or even lattice.

* Craft a design that incorporates railings and a lattice for growing climbing vines or other plants on one end of the deck.

* Incorporate creative paint or stain designs into the deck and railing system to not only protect the deck from the elements, but also to enhance its appearance.

Even a simple deck can look extraordinary if some design features are incorporated into the project. A little bit of paint and gingerbread can go a long way toward turning a basic platform for grilling and sitting into a visually appealing "location" on your property. The above ideas are only a few of the many that can be used to achieve this goal. Experiment with different ideas, have fun and visualize the way you'd like your deck to look and you should be happy with the results.
