The requirement of backyard grower is mainly a full day sun. The geography of the region should be such that the backyard in which you are going to consider planting fruit trees should not be swampy or having a sever frost. Even when you have a postage size back yard even then you can grow a good orchard.

This of course requires a good training to the plants.

This can be done by the removal of shoots allowing only one shoot to grow. This will keep the trees well trimmed and train them and to grow properly.

When you are planting the trees in your back yard remember that they will require frequent inputs of fertilizers.

Use organic fertilizers which will enrich the soil and maintain a healthy balance of nutrients which is required for the plants to grow properly.

They will bear fruits very easily and in large quantities.

Select the varieties of fruit trees which are better suit to your back yard conditions. Generally plant the fruit trees in the soil which is well drained and has god humus content. Do not plant fruit trees in the sites where water stays for more then an hour.

The trees which are growing on rocky soil require more attention and care then the trees which are being grown on deep soils. The choice of soil is not given to the home owners and so if you have soil which is not well suited to the fruit tree then you have to first treat it and improve it prior to the planting by tilling process or by the incorporation of organic matter.

The availability of sunlight should be full. One cannot expect vigorous growth of the plant if you do not have full sunlight. To avoid this situation always select the sites which are located to the north side of the tall trees or to the north side of tall buildings.

Also consider some points when you are considering the nursery stock from where you are buying the plants. Note that cross pollination is important for development of the fruit set in many plants which are fruit set. So the varieties which are cross fruitful and that have overlapping bloom dates.

So consider these points when you are gardening in your own backyard.
