Bat House In Your Backyard

You can build a bat house in your backyard for attracting the bats. Bats are one of the beneficial insects. They are regarded as the insect fighters of your house. A single colony of bat can cripple an overall mosquito population in your backyard.

How to build a bat house:

Building a bat house is similar to that of a bird house, except the entrance. The entry should be from the bottom side of the house and not from the front. The material needed for building a bat house is rough sawn plank. Bats are very sensitive to chemicals, so avoid using preservatives on the wood. They may be diverted because of the strong smell. You can place metal plates at the entry point. This is to protect the bat house from the wood peckers and the squirrels from enlarging the opening.

The size of the bat house may differ, but generally it should not be bigger than a brick. The backside of the house should be extended downwards. This lets the bats enter into the house by landing on the back plate and then climbing into the interior of the house. The back plate of the bat house can be attached to a tree or a pole with the help of a screw driver or nails. It can also be connected by means of bands to avoid the damaging of the trees.

Location of the Bat House in your Backyard- the bat houses should be spotted near a water source, if possible. This is because bats require a stable temperature from about 80 to 100 degrees. It should be preferably 20 feet high either on the trees or the poles. If they are close to the house, see to it that there is no damage for them from the utility wires or any other vegetation.

You can also purchase the bat houses which are readily available in the market. They are available in different shapes and sizes. Bats consume insects and therefore, you will find that there are generally nom insects where bats reside. Bats are the naturally predators that helps you to get rid of the insects and other pests without using any harmful chemical fertilizers.
