Boiler room is where the boiler is placed. A boiler is a closed container where water is heated and circulated. To heat the boiler various processes are used. Sometimes the heat source is inside and the water is heated outside. In other type the heat source is outside and the water is heated inside.

When you heat water or any other fluid it generates steam and tremendous pressure. If the ventilation in the room is not proper then the chances of an accident are much high. In order to avoid accidents or furnace explosion it is very important to have good ventilation in the boiler room. If the air supply is shut off the fire starts to smoke. Combustion will be incomplete and carbon monoxide will be generated. If and when fresh air is supplied to the dying fire then it might reignite again and that can lead to furnace explosion. That is why ventilation in the boiler room is very essential.

Ventilation in the boiler room can be managed either by natural forces or by using machines. Natural Ventilation does not use any machines for ventilation. Sometimes big fans are used to move the air.

When the boiler room is built generally overhead doors are made. These doors can be operated manually to provide natural ventilation.

Natural ventilation works on the principle that hot air is low in density so it goes up and cold air is heavy so it stays down.

Some companies have come up with natural ventilation systems. They work on the same principle. They catch cold air and guide it to the room and hot air is guided out.

Sometimes the room is designed such a way that the higher vents allow the hot air to go out and the vents on the lower side allow the cold air to seep in. This is called Stack driven ventilation. This process provides relatively constant air flow. It is not dependant on the wind outside. It operates on the basis of temperature difference it works better for boiler rooms as there is always heat in the room.

Air and wind are naturally available so it is cost effective as well.
