Different kinds of wood working skills can be exhibited on cabinets. Some of the techniques involved in making cabinets are system of shelving furniture and joining of appropriate corners. The edges of the furniture or cabinets can be designed decoratively with the help of finishing tools called routers.

Production of cabinetry is the main job of the carpenter or cabinet maker. Some of the products produced by the cabinet maker may not be visibly recognized as cabinets but they need the application of similar skills and techniques.

Many cabinets do not need support and some of them may be constructed with specialized in built techniques. Cabinets that are built in are customized according to the situation and they are fixed in to particular position either on floor or on the wall. Cabinets can be framed in an opening also if desired by the customer.

Modern kitchens prove to be the best example for in built cabinetry. Commonly available free standing cabinets that do not require support may be removed from place to place as and when desired. Many cabinets can be hanged against the wall or they can even be suspended from the ceiling.

Cabinets usually have three components. The base of the cabinet forms the first component. Base is normally a vital form of support extended to the cabinet when it is made to rest on floor. The base might be completely enclosed or scrolled or with a bracket feet with a set of legs.

Scrolled base is similar to that of an enclosed base but the base could be changed very often with decorative designs and patterns on the feet of the cabinet. Bracket feet's are generally attached with the corners. Colorful paints may be applied on the brackets.

The compartment forms the second base of the cabinet. Single compartment is normally present in the cabinet. They may be open or closed with adequate number of doors according to the number of the compartment.

Secret compartments may be provided in some of the cabinets that cannot be easily accessed. Drawers are also available. The final component of the cabinet is the top. The top of the cabinet is considered as a mere enclosure to the compartments.
