Introduction:

Dry rot is widely known as fungus Serpula lacrymans. It is a kind of fungus that affects the wood. They may become so intense that they can destroy a whole building. All kinds of fungus require both food which, in this case is wood or other cellulosic material and water, and the dry rot fungus is not any other kind of exception. If it is not given either of the two, it cannot survive.

Primary and secondary measures of control:

The most vulnerable feature of the fungus is its requirement for water, and it is the control and elimination of this essential requirement that forms the fundamental measure for the control and elimination of dry rot. It is very necessary to locate and rectify the source of water causing and maintaining the rot. Also one needs to promote and maintain rapid drying conditions. The removal of the source of water is the first point of attack. It is therefore, absolutely essential to stop further water ingress. This action alone eventually controls and eliminates the activity. The removal of the food source will relatively quickly stop the spread of growth. Hence, it is extremely necessary to remove all the unaffected wood. One should reinstate using pre-treated timber, or use inert materials such as concrete, steel, etc.

Repair of affected timber:

It is very important to remove all the affected woods from the surrounding. Keeping any affected timber creates many kinds of problems for the structural matter of the building and all the other falling debris can turn out to be a problem to the other occupants. Timbers that are already below the level of 20% moisture content a very little risk of decay. At a place where there is high moisture content, the risk is totally dependent on the speed with which drying can be done and the effortlessness of monitoring the decreasing moisture in the air. More high risks may be expected where the timbers very great historic importance or where their eradication cannot be easily or not at all achieved without damage to the object. In these kinds of cases, the preservation of the timbers may be needed or is at least desirable.

Effects of Dry rot

Wood once affected by dry rot cannot be treated completely and this can be termed as cancer.

Damaged wood that has been affected by dry rot looks very dull brown color and develops deep cracks. The timber loses weight and it loses moisture and will crush within the fingers. The wood that is exposed to good ventilation is less prone to dry rot. Dry rot is a fungus and this can be prevented by destroying the source of moisture which causes the dry rot. The rotten timbers replaced with treated timbers in order to avoid rot.

Treatment of dry rot and the use of Boric acid

Removal of the rotted wood will still leave spores and water in the non-infected wood. Once these spaces of the rotten wood have been scraped away they are filled with a material such as epoxy. Still rot will grow underneath. There are a few commercial treatment that are used to prevent the further rot are ineffective in wet wood. There are the two inexpensive and very commonly used materials that will not rot wood and prevent its recurrence. The Borates and Boric acid mixtures those are useful in preventing the new wood being rot and killing the rot organisms and the wood destroying insects. The ethylene glycols are used for killing red spores and wood destroying organisms. Borate solutions and glycol both of them penetrate in the dry and wet wood since they are water soluable. Neither of these are the permanent solution to the rot in wood that is constantly wet due to water. Though glycol was supposed to be a wood stabilizing agent than a rot preventative. The two types of borate products available for wood treatment tim-borate and ship borate. Concentrated solutions can be prepared from borax, boric acid and antifreeze at much at a lower cost. Glycol penetrates very fast through the paint, varnish and oil finishes.

Other Treatments

One of the preferred treatments of dry rot is to soak the soft wood or the sight of rot in antifreeze. Mist like spray should be avoided for breathing unhealthy amounts of glycol. Glycol has to be used on the damaged wood that needs to be coated. Remove the rotted wood and then add glycol to the wood that is suspected to be rotten which absorb the 10 to 20 percent of its weight in antifreeze. The surfaces away from the damaged wood also are coated. The weak, rotted wood should be added with additional glycol and wet the exposed wood. About 25 5 of borate solution has to be added and allowed to soak for several hours. Some other home made treatment like the Home brew water solutions of Borates, home brew glycol solutions of borates etc.

Dry rot is a problem which has affected people worldwide. Starting from museums, corporate offices and old buildings to wooden walls and tires, this problem has encroached in each and everyone's life. Dry rot in the basic sense is a fungus that affects the wood. Dry rot is associated with the decaying of timber in the buildings and other wooden structures. The problem of dry rot can lead to collapsing of buildings or instability in the wooden structure. Therefore, it is very necessary to prevent the problem of dry rot.

Plastic helps to prevent dry rot

We are all aware that dry rot is a problem that generally affects the wood. This problem leads to crack in the wooden structures or growth of mushroom like structures. The major reason of dry rot affecting the wooden structures is the presence of moisture. Thus if we can find a material which doesn't get affected by moisture, then it would solve the purpose of dry rot in the wooden structures. One of the best ways is to use plastics over the wooden structures. Plastics can be a good solution for the problem of dry rot. In one way, plastics are a cheaper way to solve the problem of dry rot. Even the durability and validity of this solution is quite appreciable.

The advantageous angle

Plastics as a material are resistant to moisture and water. They don't get affected by these things. So it acts as a perfect armor for the wooden structures. We can cover the wooden structures or the wooden walls for instance, with plastics. This will protect the wooden structure from being affected by the moisture content in the air. Thus the structure doesn't lose its strength and remains intact. Now the issue is of the looks. These wooden structures have a different look and a different beauty of themselves which can't be replaced by plastics. But nowadays there are certain plastic materials available in the market which gives the same feeling. These plastics can be used to cover the outer surfaces of the buildings which are more vulnerable to moisture attacks.

The dry rot is caused in two cases when there is too much of presence of moisture and when proper ventilation is not available. In these circumstances when the water is not dried properly and then left it case the dry rot. They are visible through the naked eye. It appears in ochre yellow in wood. Especially in marines they appear dark brown in color. They can detect as they are stink a lot. It is caused in the lower part of the marine. When they are seen they are to be repaired other the metal plates get destroyed very quickly. For this reason the treatment of the dry rot is very essential. The cause of this is due to the effect of the water which is remained and they are not cleaned.

Repair of the dry rot

When it is found that the dry rot is caught at the base areas of the marine then the first step which is needed to be executed out is to remove the unwanted material from those places. Then the rotten part is to be cleaned properly by checking all the corner places. After this they are rubbed with some of the sand paper which removes the coating. The removal of this coating is very essential. It has to be coated with new gel paint. The coating has to be made twice or thrice that will give it a thick coat and will also prevent rusting at certain areas. The interior and the floor parts are the main areas where it is to be coated. Even the stringers can installed at these places that will not effect when the water gets deposited.

The preventive angle

After proper lamination, it is then dried properly otherwise, it will not show any effect. Al the wood materials which are caught with dry rot has to be replaced with the new ones. It is because the wood dry rot cannot be repaired and it can only be replaced. The dry rot formation at these places is obvious, the one that damages the interior and the floor parts. When they get the water remains at these places they show such formations. Hence, after the application of the paint in these areas they can be easily prevented.

Dry rot is very hard to fight. The presence of excess moisture in the air causes dry rot. This dry rot is actually the fungus which can cause mildew, mold, staining or decay in the wood. The microorganisms are responsible for removing the cellulose from the timber and finally leaving the wood brittle and susceptible to dry rot. Fungus develops faster in the regions that are dark, moisture, heat, dirt and a dark place to grow. The seasons that cause the conditions for decay are the winters, hot and humid summers. If untreated the dry rot can spread and create more and more damage. Fungus is termed as the cancer at home.

Primary measures to control dry rot

To control and eliminate dry rot is to locate and rectify the source of water causing and maintaining the rot, Promote and maintain rapid drying conditions. The protection against water is the most important thing since it is responsible for the attack of dry rot. Hence, preventing the water contact with the wood is necessary. Using preheated timber or using the inert materials like steel, concrete, steel etc. Spatial and physical isolation can be done by using joist hangers, joinery wrap. This helps in preventing the fungus a possible food source and they prevent timbers from becoming wet. Fungicidal renderings and paints these are effective form of chemical barriers. They are based on the use of Zinc oxychloride. A spray with a masonry biocide which involves drilling perimeter of the infected area and injecting masonry sterilant into the masonry under pressure. Finally it is finished with a surface spray or brush treatment with a sterilant.

Some other treatments

The other treatments include the Insitu chemical treatment on the timber that having a surface spray. However, this is likely to have a very little effect as this provides very little protection on wood. Conventional fungicidal pastes consist of oil and water emulsion that can reduce the wood from dry rot. There are few fluid injections that are carried in organic solvents via plastic valves that are injected into the wood. Borate rods are the preservative is supplied as glass like rods that consists of a special fusion of boron compounds and they are inserted into the holes drilled into the wood. The contractor of the buildings must fully understand the factors which cause the outbreak of dry rot and take preventive measures to eliminate the causes of the outbreak of the dry rot problem. To control the dry rot this is the total responsibility of the specialist treatment companies.

The dry rot is an unwanted material that has been created with lack of water and moisture. It is also due to the excessive of the same. Thus, it can play its role vice versa. The cars which consist of a convertible top are quite prone to such dry rot. It is mainly formed in the corners of the convertible top. People staying near the hilly areas specifically in the winters may face problems of the formation of dry rot. When the dry rot is formed it damages the leather cover as well and the corner areas that are attached to the metal. These types of the problems are quite common which is needed to be checked at the very beginning of the formation. When the top is opened there is free entrance of moisture which forms the basis of rot. It is not only the water droplets that accumulate and bring such circumstance but when this water does not come in contact of air fungal attack becomes obvious. With the presence of fungus the dry rot is formed.

Treatment

When such case arises the person in concerned of the vehicle may be aware of such problems and its treatment. The cars with a convertible top add an alluring property to itself. The detection of such rot becomes necessary. During the winters they either cover the tops or if they keep it opened then one thing that they can do is check the edges and corners of the top. If some or the other way the moisture enters into it then it damages the metal by forming the rot.

Other precautions

Therefore, under these circumstances, vehicles are to be cleaned timely and at the corners. This is to be done with specific lubricants those are available. When they kept in the garage then they are totally covered due to which they get the moisture in the interiors. Hence, it is very difficult to know these areas for checking. At this time, one has to consult the mechanic for the prevention. Therefore, one has to get aware of all these facts where he or she possesses such vehicle. Maintenance of the vehicle will increase the aging and the quality of the interior material. Even some of the heating techniques will be useful for such purpose.

The rot in tires is formed due to the spider line crack on the tires. This is when the bikes are kept near the electrical appliances whereby the ozone is produced in the electrical appliances and thus it forms the dry rot in the tire rubber. When one parks his or her own bike and the tire rests on the droplets of oil then the tire gets deteriorated. Do not use the unknown products in order to increase the brightness of the black color. It slowly reduces the effectiveness of the rubber. So sometimes the use of such unknown products retards the aging of the tire.

Dry rot of tire

In order to prevent the tire from being damaged there can be some suggestive precautions that will increase the aging of the tires. The use of the some anti dry rot agent helps them to minimize and retard dry rots. The formation of dry rot in the tire rubber may lead to the bursting. So the testing of the tire will check the dry rot and thus it increases the life of tire. The use of these agents will prevent it from roughness and increase the productivity. By providing sufficient air and reducing the heat may prevent the formation of rot. The dry rot extracts the fluid part from the tire and thereby the molecules are compressed which makes it harder.

The conclusion

Thus, the flexibility character looses its part in the tire. Generally the dry rot in the tires does not cause often but consequently not using those makes the quality of the tires worse. The cracks which are produced at the edges are the reason for the cause of the dry rot. And the air leaks in the tire make them reduce its life. Even pumping the tire sometimes checks the cracks and reduces the formation of rot but some tires do not require air. The rubber tires of the vehicle can make the use of compressor also. Some types of the seals are also available which can increase the efficiency of the tire and prevent the cracks in the external parts. The use of the flat free tires can be simply used to avoid the dry rot.

The dry rot is a redundant material which is formed on the surface of the timber. The causes behind the formation of dry rot depend on the climatic changes. In different weather conditions they shape into different types of dry rots. The ventilation process will enable the prevention of the dry rot. When the dry rot forms this is seen in the surfaces of the timber, masonry and sub site soil. Hence, it needs to be treated at the earliest and this will stop the formation of the dry rot. Even some of the general precautions by common people will reduce the dry rot.

Repair of the dry rot

In order to kill the dry rot the person has to take some of the precautions. One has to follow the process of the anti rot. These are specially created on the surface of the timber. Some of the anti rot agents are boron ultra gel, boron ultra paste and boron ultra rods. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the person to check those places regularly. These places remain unchecked the formation of the dry rot continues. Especially with the application of the anti dry rot agents they reduce themselves. They can be repaired and stop the formation. It is to be identified and located where the formation of the rot takes place. The nooks and corners of the material are to be checked for this purpose.

The process involved

These dry rots are to be removed at the first step and then they are dried. Usage of the proper heating techniques will help the stop the formation. It is very essential that the use of the anti dry rot agents will avoid catching of the fungus. Formation of the rot at the holes and voids can be pasted by putty. At the places where the pipelines are cracked they can be sealed. All the wet areas are to be properly ventilated. When the help of the anti rot agents, the removal of the dry rots becomes easy. These have distinct features for killing the dry rot. Thus, the basic prevention steps lies in the checking and locating those which will help for the application of the anti rot agents.

Dry rot is a kind of fungus that affects both hard wood as well as soft wood timber. It destructs the cellulose and at the same time causes discoloration because of which the wood crumbles. This phenomenon slowly results in to the collapse of wooden structures like house flooring, ship hulls and mine shafts. The fungi requires moisture for its growth, hence, dry rot occurs only in places where there is very poor ventilation or in a place where the humidity is very high. Dry rot also occurs if the wood is not properly seasoned. The dry rot can be prevented by using creosote and many other preservatives. Sometimes dry rot may also attack standing conifers.

Causes of dry rot:

Dry rot is also known as Serpula lacrymans in medical terms. Dry rot is the most common fungus affecting the timber or rather what is better known as wood. Dry rot only affects the wood that is having a moisture content of more than 20 to 30%. The fungus also needs stagnant air for growing better and more easily. If stagnant air is not available then high humidity also works out well for the dry rot. Dry rot also causes cracking of timbers and fruit bodies. It mainly causes the wood to become spongy and thus red dust is given out. Also, it makes the wood smell of acrid mushroom.

Treatment:

Normally, the timber may become damp due to various reasons. The most common reasons for the timber to become damp is due to washing machines leakages, baths shower trays etc. many times, the dampness may also be contributed from the outer side of the building. The dry rot can be controlled if the timber is allowed to dry properly. Due to the drying of the timber, the dry may be controlled. It is not very practical to always protect the timber from dampness. It is thus very important to take secondary measures. It is wise to take defensive steps against dry rot. Any affected timber should be treated with a good quality fungicide. The masonry from where the dry rot has passed should be isolated with the help of physical containment.

Introduction: What is Dry Rot?

Dry Rot is a fungus disease the affects both softwood and hardwood timber. It is often thought of as a building cancer, rampaging through buildings and completely destroying the timber. This destruction causes discoloration and eventual crumbling of the wood. This results collapse of wooden structures such as house flooring, mine shafts, ship hulls etc. Dry rot occurs mostly in places where the ventilation is poor or humidity is high so damage may be extensive before it is discovered. Damage is often confined to timber but large mushroom like fruiting bodies can easily grow through finishes such as plaster or paint. These fruiting bodies may be the first sign of this problem.

How to identify Dry Rot?

It is important to identify whether timber decay has been caused by dry rot or any other wood destroying fungus.

* The Wood shrinks, darkens and cracks in a cuboidal manner.

* A silky grey to mushroom colored skin frequently tinged with patches of lilac and yellow color develops under low humid conditions.

* White fluffy cotton wool like mycelium develops under humid conditions.

* Strands develop in the mycelium, they are brittle when dry and crack on bending.

* Rust red colored spore dust frequently seen around fruiting bodies.

* Active decay produces a musty and damp odour.

Tips to control the risk of Dry Rot

Dry Rot has become a major problem for everyone around the world so it is most important to know the measures to control dry rot.

* First carefully inspect all the timbers or wood, skirting, floorings, floorboards, masonry etc to determine the extent of the infection.

* Inspect plasterwork adjacent to decay for signs of fungal strands/mycelium. The extent of growth can be determined by removing of plaster samples.

* Inspect cavity wall for spread of fungus by removal of random bricks to provide access.

* Check ventilation to timber suspended floors and improve if necessary.

* Locate and rectify the source of dampness causing the decay and identify other areas within the location.

* Remove all the decaying stuff from that area and replace with other one if required.

* Where ever dry rot is present remember to remove that part and replace it because it may cause further decaying.

* Thoroughly clean up and remove all dirt and debris which may contain fungal growth.
