Choosing A Deck Contractor

Adding a deck to the back of a home is a great way to create a special space for outdoor fun that includes a little bit of the civility of indoors. For those who aren't hip on the idea of a big do-it-yourself job, hiring a contractor is a good way to go.

The trek to knowing you want to hire a contractor to build a deck to actually finding one who is trustworthy and can do the job well can be a little grueling, but a bit of extra work can really pay off. To start off with, it's a good idea to decide what you want out of a deck before you make any calls.

Create a scope of work that includes your desires for the job, including estimated size of the deck, style and any special features such as an overhang, stairs, ramp or railing. Be as specific as possible so the contractors you interview know what you want the end result to look like. Measurements for desired size and so on can help here as well.

Once you've articulated your project goal in writing, call three different contractors to get estimates. Request these in writing.

As you wait for the estimates to come in, now's the time to check out the contractors you've selected. Make sure they are licensed and insured. Also check with previous customers, if possible, to see if they were happy with work performed. It's also a very good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints that have been filed.

With your homework done, now's the time to take a good look at the estimates. Compare what each of the companies intends to offer, their guarantees and then look at the bottom line. Going with the lowest bid might save some money, but if the other items don't add up, the money savings might not be worth it. If another company has a better track record and is offering more solid work, a slightly higher fee is money well spent.

Once you've found the contractor you're interested in, make sure to get a contract in writing. Be certain that you understand your rights and responsibilities under the contract and read everything before signing.

In most cases, if a little homework goes into the equation, hiring a contractor can be a very good experience. The deck you get out of the deal should serve you and your family well for years to come.
