Adding a deck onto a home is a great way to create a new space for relaxing and outdoor fun. It's also a fantastic way to make a smaller house look bigger and even bring out some great features on a home.

The trick to making a deck work both functionally and for adding eye appeal is to examine the existing house and outdoor features and balancing those things with the design of the deck. Sometimes people with elaborate backyard settings prefer to hire a designer to do this justice, but that's not always necessary.

The key is making sure your deck accents the home, hides ugly features or plays up things you really want to make stand out. Play with different designs and try to "visualize" them before deciding a on single style.

In general, a deck can be a simple undertaking with a single platform, or it can be an elaborate undertaking with different levels, railings and even an overhang or two and gates as well. It's all up to the homeowner to decide what will work best and what looks best.

In designing, make sure the primary concern is to provide for functionality. If you want a deck to serve as a location for big parties, a small deck won't do. If creating a cozy space to enjoy the outdoors is the intent, a small, semi-enclosed deck might be the way to go.

Features to pay attention to when creating your deck include any outstanding points on the part of the home where the deck will be constructed. If you have beautiful doors on the back of the house, for example, you likely will not want to hide those. They add to the appearance of the home and they can add to the deck's appeal, too. If there's a distinct color in your home's accents, you might want to play off that, too. For example, if the home is blue with white shutters and window accents, maybe a white deck to bring that out and plays against the blue?

Designing a deck without a professional designer is generally something a homeowner can do. To obtain maximum results, however, a careful study of the home itself, its surroundings and the intended use are in order. If you slam a deck together without taking these things into consideration, it will look like it's been "thrown up." If you take some time, analyze what will look good and what will work, the end product should be a deck your happy with for years to come.
