Diseases In Fig Trees

Fig trees can grow fast in any soil and will yield fruits soon. But you need to take care to prevent diseases in fig trees. The most important disease in fig trees is root knot nematodes. These are worms that will damage the root of the fig trees. They will continuously attack the roots and so the roots will lack nutrition. The main problem in this is the disease can not be easily noticed in the early stage. Yet you can check for any worms in root if the fig fruits drop before maturity. Then you can go for root sample check. You can also control nematodes by applying nematicides.

Fig rust is another major disease in fig trees. It is a fungus attack on fig leaves. If you notice yellowish spot in fig leaves then it can be decided as fungus attack. The fig rust will completely defoliate the trees. But you can control fig rust with the help of copper sprays. In rainy season the fungus will multiply. So you need to apply two coats of spray in such wet seasons.

Fig souring is another problem in fig trees. You can prevent this problem by controlling the insects. Apart from these diseases there are number of minor diseases in fig trees. Premature leaf fall may happen due to leaf rust caused by Cerotilium fici. It will grow more in rainy season.

Fig mosaic is another major disease caused by virus. This disease can not be curable and so you have to destroy the affected tree. Azochis gripusalis is a larva that will feed on new tree will tunnel down the tree up to the root and will kill the tree. Scale insects attack the barks of the fig tree and weaken them. You can safeguard the fig tree from pests and insects by careful application of pesticides. Normally figs in alkaline soil can not be disturbed by diseases because of its fertility. You can also add pesticide and insecticide to protect the tree from diseases.

Heavy rains may lead to water logging on roots. This will allow fungus to grow and there by the tree will suffer from various diseases. So avoid water logging on roots.
