Effects Of Long Term Ventilation On Premature Infants
Maintaining continuous breathing in patients who are mechanically ventilated decreases the calming requirement as well as limits the rigorous care stay. An important ventilatory mode in the newly born infants is the High-frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV). It is advancing its importance in pediatric intensive care as well as adult intensive care. With the help of HFOV, the neonates can breathe easily. Ventilation trial is made on premature babies. In this process, pressure is given on the child's chest to aid that its respiration is clear without causing him any harm. An experiment was conducted on premature babies who had problems with their breathing processes. They were repeatedly given negative- extra thoracic-pressure (CNEP) ventilation in a UK trial. It was found that these babies didn't have poor long-term results as compared to those who received an ordinary or a normal treatment. CNEP is a conduct where the child's chest is given a lot of pressure to help him in his normal breathing process.
Long-term effects of ventilation on pre-mature infants:
1. Sensitive to the irritants of the lungs is seen increasingly
2. The risk of infections related to respiration is much greater
3. There is damage to the lungs due to the long-term ventilation. This damage to the tissues of the lungs can sometimes lead to a condition called bronchopulmonary dysplasia. This is persistently related to the difficulties in breathing.
