For home apple growers they should plant either dwarf or semi dwarf trees instead of full size trees. The main reason for it is that the dwarf and semi dwarf trees are easier to manage at a domestic level. Another advantage of these varieties is that it produces fruits earlier then the standard or full size trees. But a major disadvantage is that these varieties cannot give fruits for a long period of time. Till the perennial time so most of the commercial orchards plant the standard varieties.

Note that these dwarf and semi dwarf varieties have poor root anchorage. These trees need to be supported by an external support.

These varieties are usually root stocked on the scion. The main root stock mainly determines the height of the plant. So the dwarf varieties grow up to the height of ten feet similarly the semi dwarf varieties can grow upto fifteen feet tall and the tall varieties will grow at least twenty feet tall.

Important points to be noted when the planting the orchard:

First and fore most important point to be considered is that you should choose the fruit planting as close as possible. Where the space is limited fruit trees can be set in almost any location which is suitable for them. The dwarf varieties come into bearing very early then the standard varieties. As these trees occupy less area you can easily plant them. The dwarf varieties can be pruned and sprayed very easily by a domestic gardener with the help of average instruments which are easily available to them. Most of the dwarf varieties are available in the nurseries. For example the dwarf varieties of most of the fruits like peach, apple, pear and cheery trees are available very easily.

Note that the Dwarf trees do not live for more then five years due to disease and incompatibility problems.

Spacing of the trees:

It is an important factor to a large extent it influences the selection of site and varieties. The distance between the plants varies from variety to variety for example. The minimum distance which is required for dwarf apple trees is thirty feet. For cheery sour it is eighteen feet and for the sweet variety it should be twenty five feet. For peach it should be twelve feet. These are the average distances which can be increased but do not minimize the distance between them.

These are the points which are important from the point of view of the orchards of fruit trees.
