How To Grow Tulips

Your spring garden will appear as incomplete without the colorful, dancing tulip heads. Tulips have a wide range of size, form and color, as well. The gardener needs to use his creativity and imagination for forming new designs as well as unusual effects in his flower garden.

How to grow tulips?

October-November is the best time for growing the tulips in your garden. Before planting the tulip seeds, dig the ground a foot deep below the ground level. Use a large amount of compost, rotted manure and any other peat moss to enrich your soil and increase its fertility level. You can also use wood ash and bonemeal as a plant food. The estimated amount is about two cups each for every two dozens of the bulbs.

The planting depth should be about 4-5 inches from the peak of the bulb. Planting the bulbs deep down ensures the growth of the annuals, that directs towards the over the tulips without endangering them. The flattened base of the bulb should be planted in the downward direction, and the tip of the plant pointing in the upward direction. The plant should be watered thoroughly after you have finished planting it, so as to allow the proper settling of the soil.

You can also do mulching to the tulips, specially during the severe winters. Mulching means a covering of the grass, straw, leaves, grass clippings or even pine boughs. Mulching helps to preserve the moisture and also provides the organic matters needed for to the soil. The mulching cover should be removed in the early springs.

Take care that you cut off the flowers from the plant immediately after they fade away. Otherwise, the dry and faded flowers will continue to absorb the nutrients and food of the plant. But, be sure to remember that the leaves should not be cut off until they have dried up completely.

Tulips like the sunlight, so they should be placed in such a area that will have enough exposure to the sunlight. The tulip plant should be watered thoroughly. When the leaves start turning yellow after flowering, watering should be stopped for some time. Start watering again when you notice that the soil surface is getting dry.

Growing tulip plants requires a lot of patience. It takes about a period of 5 years or more for growing the tulip big enough so that it can flower.
