Dry rot is considered to be one of the most ravaging building funguses on the face of earth. The fungus usually survives in the moist and conditions where there is no ventilation at all. They penetrate through the brick wall in search of more timber and can thus cause widespread destruction of structural timbers, skirting boards and door frames, and other wooden structures. In brief, the fungus can be considered as 'living in masonry and eating all the available wood', and because the fungus is able to survive in damp and unventilated conditions, it may affect the areas of a property that are not often seen.

Treatment:

The dry-rot actually came from the belief that the fungus has the ability to transport moisture from a source quite far away and attack wood that is dry. Although dry rot has the capability to transport moisture over several meters, it cannot transport some where near enough moisture to affect the wood that is normally dry. The treatment of dry-rot may involve the removal of the affected timber, also involving all the wood for a meter that is beyond the reach of the fungus, and also chemical pesticide treatments for all the surrounding wood and the brickwork of many contaminated walls and plaster. However, this kind of treatment is an unnecessary expense.

The preventive part

The methods are the simple ways to take care that the wood property does not become damp for the dry rot to affect the wood. For example changing dry-rot decayed joists with a new wood using joist hanger, in place of putting them back into the brickwork, or with the help of ventilated skirting board to encourage a good amount air supply of a floor void. Replaced doorframes should have a strip of damp-proof covering around the outside, so that it can fully isolate it from damp or potentially damp brickwork, thus the wood will never become so damp that the dry rot can affect it. If the fungus dry rot is found, it is probably best to have the problem looked at from a special pest controller. Corrective action should be taken by a good specialist firm, so that one has a guarantee if the problems makes a come back.
