Well, having one's home orchard is not a child's play. One needs to take lots of efforts and care of the orchard to make the orchard flourish properly. To get proper results, one needs to properly set the home orchard. The setting of an orchard involves various steps like a proper 'time of planting the trees', 'handling the nursery stock', and then 'actually planting of the trees'.
One needs to take a lot of care when deciding upon the proper time of tree planting. The best period that is recommended for the planting of the trees is said to the period in which the tree is supposed to be dormant and also the soil carries the required moisture for the proper growth of the plants.
We normally buy a fruit tree, for orchard purpose, that is from a 'local nursery' or those that are 'bare root trees'. Thought, both these types of trees are very good at delivering a good fruit, selecting the appropriate variety of these trees is very important. When buying a tree, they should be properly inspected and in case of any damage or disease, should be replaced immediately. Avoid the trees being exposed to extreme conditions like too hot or too cold. It is advisable to not to plant the trees immediately after buying, they should be properly stored and then planted after around two to three weeks. Also, soak the roots of the trees before planting.
Inspect the soil thoroughly before planting trees. The hole for the trees should be as deep as possible for proper rooting, but not so deep that that the rootstock and scion of the tree falls below the ground level. Pruning of the roots of the young trees is also advisable.
