Insects In Home Orchards

The orchards attract different types of insects towards them. These insects are either beneficial of harmful and they reduce the yield from the orchards. Therefore, it is important to keep a watch and take proper care of the insects, which are harmful to the plants.

The types of insects

There are a number of types of insects. They are bugs, caterpillars, flies, spider, ants, centipedes, millipedes, earthworms, scorpions, ticks, mites, daddy long legs, etc. They are some of the types of insects, which live on the plants. They are an important part of the ecosystem. However, in some cases they prove to be a problem for the orchard owners.

Among the insects above, some are beneficial. The beneficial insects include the flies, bees, and other insects, that act as pollinating agents. In addition, some of the insects play important roles in the other activities of the plants.

The harmful ones include the ants, caterpillars, spiders, bugs, etc. They eat up the useful and undesired parts of the plants.

Prevention

* There are a number of things, which you can use for the prevention of the insects. They are classifiable according to the natural biological or chemical methods.

* The natural methods include the selection of the plants that the insects will not affect.

* Maintaining a proper health of the plants is also useful as, the unhealthy plants release some chemicals that attract the insects.

* Use of the parasites, or the animals and birds, which feed on these insects, removes them from the orchards.

Methods of cure

* There are different stages of growth of the insects. Therefore, you can tryout different things for these different stages of their lifecycle.

* The most common and practical method for eliminating them is, the use of pesticides. This will immediately kill them and free the orchard from them. You can use the chemical pesticides or the pesticides that are from natural origin and hence less toxic.

* In addition, a number of biological methods are available like encouraging and allowing the birds and animals that feed on the insect. This is a good and easy method. In addition, many parasites that infect them are available in the nature and in the market.

* You can use insect traps.

These are only some of the many methods, which you can use for the prevention of the insects in the orchards. You can make use of the other methods as well. However, be careful, as some of the insects are useful for the plants. You should not eliminate them too.
