The lemon trees grow up to a moderate height and they are evergreen trees. They are tropical trees but these days many varieties are available that you can plant in the cold countries as well. If you take proper care of them, you can plant them in your home orchard and gain fruits.

Plant information

They grow moderately in height. They have leaves that are oval and are shiny in appearance. The flowers are fragrant and occur in the winter. The development of the fruits occurs in the summer season.

If you cut them regularly then you can keep them with the height of 6-9 feet. This is the ideal height for the plants when you are growing them in the house orchard. They will have the maximum branches and bear good amount of fruits.

Planting

You can plant them from the seeds that you get after eating the fruits. This method is convenient and easy. However, if you want plants of good quality then you can get them from the nurseries or you yourself can even develop them through the vegetative propagation. If you purchase them from the nursery then the plants should be 2 to 3 years.

You can plant them outside the house in the orchard in the ground as well as in containers. However, then the containers should be big enough. Plant them in slight acidic soils. You may try the commercial all-purpose mix available in the markets.

Also, bear in mind that they require temperatures in the range 55 to 70. The plant may go in a state of dormancy if the temperature falls bellow 54 degrees farenheight.

While planting them, also remember that they require a direct sunlight in a good amount. If the light is not well, enough then you can even supplement the light by applying 40 watts fluorescent lights.

After care

The plant require good amount of water and fertilizers. Therefore, you should regularly water them and maintain the soil moist. You should add fertilizers while planting them, and even after that, regularly add fertilizers.

The pollination is through the insects. Therefore, if the plants do not pollinate then you need-to artificially, pollinate them using brushing or dusting methods.

Prune or cut the trees for inducing more branching. You may do mulching for higher gains. The right time of harvesting is when the fruits gain their specific color.
