The sun

This is generally considered the worst enemy of a deck by the uninitiated, but this is typically not true. The sun only causes surface damage to a deck, but it can create some cosmetic problems. Sealing a deck will help prevent issues with sun damage, but remember this is not the biggest culprit you should be on the look out for.

Water

This is not your deck's best friend. Whether the water comes in rain form, dew or snow, water can create all kinds of problem for wood. Cycles of getting wet and drying out can wreak havoc on wood, causing it to warp, crack and even bow. If water saturates a deck's wood, rotting can take place as can mold and mildew damage. These things can render a deck useless or at least require replacement of planks. Regular cleanings and wood treatments can help avoid this problem.

Insects

If it's not treated, wood on a deck is a termite's playground. Make sure you buy treated wood to build your deck with, otherwise it's a very good idea to make sure the sealer you use repels these wood eating critters.

Many things can damage the appearance of a deck, but there are steps a homeowner can take to ensure a deck looks as good a few years later as it did the day it was finished. Regular cleanings and proper sealing are key. Make sure to seal a deck right after building it to help protect it from Day One.
