Repairing Backyard Tools

The wooden handles of tools can develop slight cracks and this can be repaired by wrapping the handle with a glass filament tape. The best way to preserve wood handle is to apply several coats of quality varnish or to paint it.

Splinters in wooden handles of rakes, hoes, and shovels can be cured by sanding the surface till it becomes smooth and this not only protects the hands of the gardener but keeps the cracks from spreading and causing the handle to break.

The metal edges of shovels, racks or other garden tools can become nicked and this can be smoothened with a metal file. This can be done with any abrasive that is good for metal. The metal parts have to be coated with a mixture of petroleum jelly and light oil to prevent rust.

Dents in the tools can be straightened by hammering with a mallet. Wheelbarrow can be repaired from any hard ware shop. Painting the wheel barrow helps in preserving the wood. The moving parts of wheelbarrow need occasional oiling to run smoothly.

Tools that are cracked can be repaired by wrapping the handles with electrical tape .Once the handles are wrapped it becomes easy again to use the tool. The electrical tapes are available in any local hard ware shop.

During winter the tools should be kept in dry place to avoid dampness .All tools must be wiped of any dirt or grass before being stored.
