Sheltering Birds In Backyard
As we all need a place for sheltering ourselves such as a house, similarly birds being living things, also need a place for sheltering them. They too need protection against sun, wind, cold and enemies. Their best shelter is the covering of the different shrubs and vines. This provides them with food as well as shelter. Whenever you place a feeder for attracting the birds, also make some place for the birds to hide close to your feeders.
Nesting Boxes- you can create a bird house or a nest a box for the birds to take shelter in. different types of boxes will definitely attract different species of birds. Bird houses are available in a wide range of variety, sizes and types in the market. Once you know the birds well in your area, you can select the appropriate bird house for that particular species of the bird.
Either you build the bird house yourself or purchase them from the market, see to it that they are very durable. Also while placing these boxes, avoid placing them very closely. Five to six boxes in an acre is usually enough.
Shelter- a safe shelter is required by the birds to protect them from the predators and different weather conditions.
* Well planted thickets and hedgerows along with thje food offer a great covering as well as nesting sites to the birds.
* Conifers like cedar provide the birds with warmness, a place for hiding and nesting sites.
* You can also create an instant shelter by making a pile of brush. Youn just have to collect fallen branches of the trees and lay them at a height of around 3 feet. Place them in a corner against a hedge or a fence.
* Woodpeckers are strongly attracted by snags while searching for the insects. Make cavities in it to roost and nest for the different species of birds. Snags provide the woodpeckers with a warm and an insulated winter cover.
* A thick layer of vines can be put over a fence or a brush pile and allow them to climb over the sides of the walls of your house. This covering roosts a better site for the birds, in addition, it also provides food to the birds.
* You can also place roosting boxes that are airtight with 3-4 perches inside. These perches are for the accommodation of many birds at a time.
* Nest boxes can be hung over the trees or the top of the windows. It will provide protection and warmth to the different birds in the chilly winters.
