Sunflowers or the Helianthus (scientific name) is a very attractive flower and it can grow them in the garden. It is a summer flowering plant. It is a native of the North as well as the South America. Nevertheless, it can be cultivated any where in the world.

Factors necessary for their growth

The sunflower plants require a lot of sunlight and some shade for some time. It requires a moderate temperature it will not grow properly if the weather is too cold. It requires a moderate amount of water.

The nutrient requirement for the plant is quite high. Therefore, you should regularly supply nutrients to it. You should maintain a proper distance between the adjacent plants. You cannot take them out and then replant them in some other place.

Their old leaves turn brown and they remain on the plant itself. They may cause damage to the new leaves as they serve the pests. You should not let any weed to gather around them. They may affect their growth. The use of the artificial pesticides chemicals etc will be affected the plant. The grass seeds too affect it.

Planting

You can plant them in a number of ways. You can use the seeds or use other methods like cutting or other vegetative methods.

The sunflowers are of two types they are the tall and the dwarf varieties. The tall variety can grow up to 6-10 feet. Alternatively, the dwarf varieties grow up to 24 inches.

Cultivation

The sunflowers are very attractive and they have some economical uses. They contain a good amount of oil content and this oil is a commercial product in most of the countries. The sunflower is as cash crop. Sunflower oil is useful for cooking in many countries. Its oil does have good edibility and nutritive values.

Harvesting

The sunflowers gain the optimum growth within 4-5 months of planting. Once they become brown I the centre or their backsides become yellow colored, it is the right time for harvesting them. While cutting them leave a little stem with them. Then keep them in for drying in the sun. When they become dry, the seeds tend to fall off. You should prevent it.
